Their first date was at Phoklore in Torquay, a spot that's since become one of their absolute favourites. The first thing Hannah noticed that night wasn't Sam's charm or his conversation. It was his pink boardshorts, covered in camels. As Sam will happily tell you, there's Theo, there's Hannah, and then there are those boardshorts, and all three are still going strong.

Jokes aside, the connection was immediate. The conversation didn't let up all night, and they were the last two left in the restaurant. Sam knew early on that he'd found someone who felt less like a first date and more like one of his best mates, just one he also happened to be completely smitten with. Hannah, for her part, was won over by his kindness, his humour, and (against her better judgement) his mullet and moustache. She knew she was in trouble the moment she caught herself thinking a mullet was attractive.

Neither of them wanted to wait to see each other again. The next day it was a swim and a beach day, followed by fish and chips and a conversation that picked up exactly where it left off. The weekend after that, Sam took Hannah on a hike to a waterfall, then cooked her dinner which they ate on the veranda, talking for hours with music playing in the background. Hannah spoke about Sam as the quietly patient, hardworking, endlessly caring partner who'd taught her to surf and skate and who showed up for every part of their life together. Neither vow was polished for effect. Both were completely, unmistakably real, which is exactly what this couple wanted from the start.
